Course Languages and Language Requirements

WHAT IS THE COURSE LANGUAGE?

In general:

  • All bachelor’s programmes, all degree programmes for future teachers, and the master’s programmes Master Mathematik, Master Meteorologie and Master Physik are held in German.
  • The master’s programmes Master of Mathematics, Master of Meteorology and Master of Physics are held in English

Choice of language:

  • Seminar presentations
  • Oral and written exams
  • Master’s thesis

WHAT ARE THE LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS?

The language requirements that an applicant must meet are set out in the relevant admission regulations.

In general:

Proof of sufficient German language skills at Common European Language Framework (CEFR) level B2

  • As a rule, this proof must be submitted at registration.
  • For further information on language levels visit the FSZ website.

Applicants whose mother tongue is German or who can produce a university entrance qualification for courses held in German, or who have acquired a bachelor’s degree in a programme conducted in German are exempt.

INSUFFICIENT LANGUAGE SKILLS?

Students who do not possess the level required in German must take a German foundation course as part of their coursework.

The Centre for Applied Linguistics and Special Languages (FSZ) at Leibniz University Hannover offers a wide variety of courses for learning German. Courses to prepare for the DSH exam are also on offer to international applicants to the university. Prior registration is required for FSZ courses.
