The Faculty of Mathematics and Physics was created in the year 2005 by merging the former departments of physics and mathematics into a new unit comprising 13 institutes, 41 professors, 1800 students and 180 members of scientific staff. Recent developments include the participation in the Cluster of Excellence "REBIRTH", the new Graduate Research Training Group "Analysis, Geometry, and String Theory", and, most notably, the successful establishment of the Cluster of Excellence "QUEST".
The Faculty of Mathematics and Physics offers courses in mathematics, physics and meteorology which lead to the degree "Bachelor of Science" in three years, and eventually to the degree "Master of Science" in another two years.
All our programmes are research-oriented and meet european quality standards as required within the so called Bologna-Process.
Research activities at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics cover modern mathematics, physics, and meteorology as well as didactics. Within each discipline, there are workgroups focussing on fundamental research as well as others specializing in applications. Our specific strengths are based on excellent interdisciplinary research and lively scientific exchange between the various groups.
